Having created infographics for a wide variety of clients, I thought it would be worthwhile analysing why they are such a powerful method of communicating.

 

 

They can explain complex theories and ideas

 

The term “A picture is worth a thousand words” is very true. For the following graphic I was given a couple of pages of impenetrable text and asked to simplify the information in order to communicate the messages.

 

 

 

Organised and presented in the right way, what is essentially a monotone chunk of text can actually look beautiful.

 

 

 

Make artwork that is visually appealing yet immediately communicative

 

This infographic was commissioned to explain the complex nature of a client's surveying business. It was produced like a board game entitled 'Navigating the Property Ladder'.

 

 

 

 

 

Subtlety can work too

 

If you are discussing difficult subjects, imagery is the perfect way to address issues without being explicit.

 

 

This image was created to depict the subject of teenage sex and pregnancy for a book aimed at fairly young readers. It communicates the idea of intimacy without the need to be graphic.

 

 

 

This image is illustrating transsexuality in a fun and positive way

 

 

 

Good for your brand:

 

Infographics can help to build brand awareness if presented in a consistent style. These images were created for online estate agency, Hatched, to clarify how their business works. Being playful with type and images can effectively communicate what is essentially quite dry information in a light-hearted way. This can result in achieving brand awareness and potential customers who may not have necessarily thought they were interested in what you offer.

 

 

Creating engaging content for your printed materials or website is a very powerful way to maintain your presence without becoming repetitive.

 

 

 

Personality with professionalism:

 

Visually strong posts are proven to appeal to more readers and are much more likely to be shared on social media. This in tern helps increase traffic back to your site, resulting in higher SEO ranking and conversions, which can mean new business. This provides the return on your investment (ROI) that every business owner is looking for.

 

 

 

This autobiographical infographic was made for a photographer who wanted to add another visual element to her website to accompany her amazing work. She wanted her potential clients to get to know her so she decided to present herself in a fun but coherent and professional way. The feedback so far is that her clients absolutely love it. She has this as a permanent feature on her website but also uses it on social media to stand out from the competition.

 

 

 

A great way to present factual information:

 

Many of us process visual information far more easily than plain text and we manage to retain much more of this information if presented in a clear and succinct way. There is no reason why this shouldn't be fun too, as the following illustration shows.

 

 

 

Keep text to a minimum:

 

It is important not not to clutter infographics with too much text. Instead use really clear imagery and purely factual information to strip the message down to its simplest form.

 

 

 

Having said this, text is still important but you do not have to use much of it. For example, for a blog post or article, a combination of imagery with excellent written content will be far more engaging to your readers.

Make images bold and graphic:

 

We all know that the stuff we see online is battling for our attention. So being eye-catching is essential.

 

 

 

 

 

Finding new markets:

 

Many companies post text-based social media updates on sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter but you may wish to add content to purely image-based social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest. If your business is not naturally visual, creating specific content can help you reach previously untapped followers.

 

 

Share, share, share!:

 

When your infographic is complete make sure to share it in as many places as possible. This will make it very easy for others to share to their followers and friends.

 

Whether you are selling a product or a service, consider using infographics as part of your marketing plan.
